HAVE A QUESTION? I enjoy your columns here in the Palm Beach Post. I have a real problem, and I seem to get the correct answer. I had a Gateway 2000 with Windows 98. I disposed of that and got a Gateway 500S. Prior to disposal of the old machine, I had CompUSA download my information on the hard drive to seven CDs.

My present Gateway 500S has Home XP. I seem to load the info from the CDs into the machine, and then bring them up. I called Gateway. They gave me all kinds of tech talk, which I understand. Someone told me I have to get a Microsoft disc, as some of my information is on Microsoft Excel, some on Microsoft Word and some on Microsoft Works.

I. Alan Cohen Boynton Beach, Fla. likely that you need to install those programs on your PC to open the files. answering this question because it also relates to files that arrive as e-mail attachments. I often get letters from readers who have received a file by e-mail but open it.

Keep in mind that you need the program that created the file to open it. Or, failing that, you need another program that can recognize the same file format. So in some cases, you can use another word processor or spreadsheet program including some free and inexpensive ones available for download at sites such as www.tucows.com to open files created by more expensive Microsoft programs. If you want to buy the Microsoft program, try searching the Tucows site first. Often I can find a substitute program by simply typing in the name of the program originally used to create the file.

For instance, if you type in Microsoft Word as the search term, you will locate substitute programs that can work with that format. You can also search using the extension of the file you are trying to open. The extension is the last three letters of the file name. So, using Microsoft Word as an example, a file name might look like this: letter.doc is the file extension). According to your recommendation, I recently upgraded from Windows ME to Windows XP.

The upgrade has solved every problem that I experienced daily with ME. Since the upgrade, the following items appear on my Disk Cleanup program: Windows Installation Files: 555,629 Backup Files for Previous Operating Programs: 590,853 Can I clean them up, or should I leave them on my computer? Michael M. Malihi These files are retained so that, if the new program or operating system work out, you can easily return to the old one that did work. My general rule of thumb is to leave these files for a month or so. If everything is working after that length of time, usually safe to delete these files.

I follow the same rule with files I have deleted and placed in the Apple trash can or Windows recycle bin. Rather than emptying it right away, I let the old files sit. saved me a lot of grief on several occasions when I discovered that I needed the file after all. If simply sitting in the recycle bin, easy to return it to your computer. Tip from a reader I read your recent Computer Tips column, and I have a solution for the owner of the computer that slowly loses resources if he leaves the computer on.

A Web site (www. analogx.com) has several well-written programs that are best classified as One of these is MaxMem which can free up resources without rebooting the machine. In fact, you can set the resources to Minimum, Periodic or Aggressive depending on your needs. This is freeware. Richard Bodor note: Freeware is a program that is available for download at no charge.

Shareware, a related type of software, is available for a small charge. More memory advice To solve the Windows 95 and 98 memory leak problem, I use a shareware program called Cacheman to manage the memory in my Windows 95 computer. It does a great job. The computer runs at work, with no problems. The computer is about a 1995 vintage, which I bought in 1998 for $50, and now has 98 megabytes of RAM.

Cacheman is available for $10 registration with a free trial from www.outertech.com.
