Monday, April 24, 2000 LOCAL NEWS The Atlanta -Constitution Trial: First indictment quashed in 'terrible nightmare' teen case murder. We're talking about boys who got tangled up in what they thought was going to be quick fight. It turned out to be terrible nightmare for one, and for the other, spun his soul into eternity." Turley's mother, Joyce Brooks, wants Newsome punished, but she is relying on court system, to decide how much. "I think he should have pay," she said. "How many years? I don't know.

I'm not asking his life; I'm not that kind of person. I ask God to help me forgive." Brooks has found some comfort in knowing 1 that her son's organs were donated to save others' lives. Her family has kept close touch with Gordon Goodemote of Omega, near Tifton, who received the boy's heart in transplant. Goodemote is doing well and planned to attend the first birthday party for Brooks' youngest grandson this weekend. The autopsy report sheds little light on how the headlock turned into a homicide, aside from clinical description: "Injury resulted in rapid movement the head relative to the neck," the report says, adding that right vertebral artery, which supplies blood to the brain, hemorrhaged at the second vertebrate.

Houman said the district attorney's office will probably ask another grand jury to indict Newsome on a charge of manslaughter, although the charge might involuntary manslaughter, which carries a 10-year maximum sentence upon conviction. It is too early to say whether other felony counts will be sought, he said. Reconsideration of the indictment does not signal a weakening of the prosecutors' resolve, Houman said. "On one hand, you have a family that lost a son. On the other hand, you have unusual fact pattern." It's for grand jury and possibly a trial jury to sort out, he said.
