LOCAL NEWS B4 Monday, April 24, 2000 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution OBITUARIES Trial: First indictment quashed in 'terrible nightmare' teen case FAMILY- PLACED DEATH NOTICES! Continued fromB I ASHBY Mr. Deddric of 1479 Rena Ct, Conyers, passed suddenly April 22. Funeral announced later. Levett Sons, Conyers, 770-483-9885. Steven Justin Newsome is free on bond, but his parents must accompany him when he leaves his home.

The autopsy report sheds little light on how the headlock turned into a homicide, aside from a clinical description: "Injury resulted in rapid movement of the head relative to the neck," the report says, adding that the right vertebral artery, which supplies blood to the brain, hem-orrhaged at the second vertebrate. Houman said the district attor Chatham Mr. Frank Wesley of Duluth, died April 23,2000. Mr. Chatham was a graduate of Georgia Tech, Class of 1978.

He was also a former member of Campus Church of Christ. Mr.Chatham's service will be Tuesday, April 25,2000 at 3:00 PM at the chapel of R.T. Patterson Funeral Home with Jody Vickery and David Fincher, officiating. Mr. Chatham is survived by wife, Terri Lynn Chatham, Duluth; daughters, Amy, Hollie and Ashlie, all of Norcross; parents, Frank and Mary Chatham, Nor-crass; brother, Doug Chatham, Duluth; sisters, Donna Stanford, Norcross; and Connie Oliver, Texas.

The family will be at the funeral home, Monday evening, 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Interment will be at Peachtree Memorial Park. R.T. Patterson Funeral Home, Norcross, 770-448-2441. BAKER Minnie Mae Baker of Ellenwood, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2000.

She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Mrs. J.S. Henry of Mableton, Mrs. Walter R. Henry of Smyrna; a sister, Mrs.

Elizabeth Arnau of Del Ray Beach, FL; foster daughters, Jean Goodson, Smyrna, Judy Dyar of McOonough; granddaughter, Debbie Smidt of Dunwoody; great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Ward's Fairview Chapel on Tuesday, April 25 at 10 a.m. with interment services to' follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Rev. Martha Forrest will officiate.

murder. We're talking about two boys who got tangled up in what they thought was going to be a quick fight. It turned out to be a terrible nightmare for one, and for the other, spun his soul into eternity." Turley's mother, Joyce Brooks, wants Newsome punished, but she is relying on the court system.to decide how much. "I think he should have to pay," she said. "How many years? I don't know.

I'm not asking for his life; I'm not that kind of person. I ask God to help me forgive." Brooks has found some comfort in knowing that her son's organs were donated to save others' lives. Her family has kept in close touch with Gordon Goode-mote of Omega, near Hfton, who received the boy's heart in a transplant Goodemote is doing well and planned to attend the first birthday party for Brooks' youngest grandson this weekend. If a grand jury returns an BARRETT indictment, it will be the second in the case. Last year, a grand jury indicted Newsome on charges of voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and cruelty to children, each of which carries a maximum 20-year term.

But Judge Sidney Nation quashed the manslaughter count last month, saying the district attorney had not worded it in a way that demonstrated "serious provocation" on Newsome's part Newsome, meanwhile, is free on bond, but is not allowed to leave his parents' house unaccompanied by them. ney's office will probably ask another grand jury to indict New-some on a charge of manslaughter, although the charge might be involuntary manslaughter, which carries a 10-year maximum sentence upon conviction. It is too early to say whether other felony counts will be sought he said. Reconsideration of the indictment does not signal a weakening of the prosecutors' resolve, Houman said. "On one hand, you have a family that lost a son.

On the other hand, you have an unusual fact pattern." It's for a grand jury and possibly a trial jury to sort out, he said. "His friends told me being a freshman at UGA was hard with everything going on, but that Phil was a real positive influence," said Mrs. Paschal-Walsh. But, of all the children, he was the one I never worried about. He just did what he was supposed to do." "Like the vacuum cleaner because nothing got past him, he just swept everything up," said his mother, Ruth Paschal-Walsh of Atlanta. He also had a strategy for the batter's box. "He'd get up there and squat real low so that the strike zone was very small," said his mother. "And the pitchers ended up walking him a lot because they couldn't hit the zone. Often he was the first batter up because he would always somehow end up on base." The funeral for Philip Eugene Walsh, 19, of Atlanta is 11 a.m.
