J-6 fhf Atlanta Immial AND COSTmTIO DECEMBER 7, 1989 GWINNETT SPORTS Berkeley Hills duo finishes second at Jekyll golf tourney ByStanAwtrey Staffwriter Two golf pros from Berkeley Hills Country Club finished second earlier this week in the Mac-Gregor Pro-Pro Tournament at Je-tyll Island's Oleander Course. Craig Martin, the head profes sional at Berkeley, teamed with new assistant Scott Hinkly to take runner-up honors. The Berkeley duo shot a two-day best-ball total of 133 and finished three strokes behind Jack Gaudion and Rodney Shaver of Whitewater Creek in Fayetteville. "We just teammed good," Mar tin said. "We both played well together.

We hammed and egged it pretty good." Hinkly is a newcomer to Berkeley, having recently replaced Joe Pinson as an assistant Hinkly, 26, was formerly an assistant pro at Bay Pointe Golf Club in Panama City, Fla. Martin and Hinkly began the day tied with the Gaudion and Shaver, as both duos shot 66 on the first day. But Martin and Hinkly got off to a slow start on Tuesday and could never recover. "We just couldn't get it going," Martin said. "We couldn't make any putts.

We didn't have a birdie until the second nine. We just messed up." Martin, whose administrative duties prevent him from playing much golf, was pleased with his performance. 'That's the best I've played in quite a while," he said. Also tying for second place at 135 was the duo of Toby Chapin and Brooks Simmons. Stan Czerno, the former hjad professional at Springbrook Country Club, teammed with Al Jeraigan to place fourth at 138.

I Broncos ride high as -No. 8 in state Victory over Berkmar gives team 44 record By Scott Bernardo Staffwriter a- 7' 1 Steve DealStaff To have and to hold: Shiloh wrestlers Rusty Joiner (top) and Tom Kaestner work on their techniques. Shiloh beat perennial' powerhouse Berkmar Friday in the first dual meet of the season. easing of a dmngkhold While it may not be surprising that the Brookwood High School boys basketball team is 4-0, the margin of the Broncos' victories has raised some eyebrows, including those of head coach Eddie Martin. The Broncos, ranked No.

8 in Georgia and No. 1 in Gwinnett County heading into the weekend, have ripped off their victories by an average margin of 32.5 points, including Tuesday's 79-63 win at Berkmar. They also have defeated Parkview (71-37), Heritage (97-53) and Central Gwinnett (G3-50X "Yeah, it has been kind of surprising," said Martin, whose team returned three starters from last season's Class AAAA final-four "because I don't think we're exactly on top of our game yet We're not clicking in some areas like we should." Martin pointed to mental lapses on offense and defense as problem areas he has seen so far. With several additions to the varsity squad, including junior transfer Ryan Amestoy, Martin said his team is still in a feeling-out stage. He expects the Broncos to make more improvements as they continue to learn to play together.

He added that Tuesday's win against a physically strong Berkmar team showed him some signs that Brookwood is beginning to find a groove. He said that in the Broncos' first three games the scores had been so lopsided that his players didnt stay focused on the court The Berkmar game, however, was an entirely different story. "It was a lot closer than the way the score ended, so we had to stay mentally tough and mentally sharp the whole game," Martin said. "It was a good game for us. I thought we accomplished some things, but we still have some things to improve on." Despite Martin's belief that the Broncos "still have a ways to go," they have asserted selves as one of the teams to beat this season in Region 8-AAAA.

They are scoring 813 points per game while allowing only 50.7. Brookwood has been paced by the play of front-liners Todd Lo-gue and Amestoy. Logue, a senior pivotman, averages a team-high 20 points and 12 rebounds per game, and leads the team in field-goal percentage. Amestoy, who played at Redan High School in DeKalb County last season, is averaging 17.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per contest and is second on the squad in field-goal shooting. Senior Brett Binkley and junior Matt Britt also are putting up solid numbers.

Binkley, the point guard, averages 16 points, 8 assists and has hit on 58 percent of his three-point attempts. Britt, a 6-3 wing, is averaging 14.7 points pergame. Parity catching up to county's traditional wrestling powers By Michael Alport Staffwriter rni he winds of change are fill swirling through Gwinnett Just ask Berkmar coach Tom Dursee and Parkview -Li coach Dennis Stromie. advantaged by having graduated four grapplers who placed in state, while the Generals have returned nine wrestlers who saw extensive action last year. Perennially strong Parkview, which was 15-0 in 1987 and 14-1 in 1988, finished second at county last year, first at region and fifth in state.

North, which finished third at county, first in Region 8-AAA (15-0) and fifth in state, was billed as strong, but was not pected to topple Parkview especially in the first week of the season. On the strength of Daniel Bailey's 16-8 decision over Jerry Sikes in the 119-pound division, the Bulldogs edged the Panthers 37-34 Saturday in Parkview's second meet this season and North's first "We're not looking for excuses," Dursee says of losing to Shiloh. "We just lost to a better team. They the Generals came out prepared, and, bottom line, they beat us plain and simple. We PARITY Continued on J7 The two traditional powers lost dual meets in the first week of the season.

"There's definitely a greater parity among the county's teams," says Dursee, whose perennial powerhouse fell to an emerging Shiloh team in Friday's first dual meet of the season. "Nobody is going to walk away with it Things are going to be a lot more even this year." The Patriots, who own nine county titles and whose dominance caused the county tournament's cancellation several years ago, finished second in Region 8-AAAA at 16-3 and third in the state tournament Shiloh, by contrast, finished last year 9-6 and only placed fiah at county and fourth in region.
