iNTOWN EXTRA, NOVEMBER 10, 1988 Harwell School Named Changed to Honor Miss Usher II II I.I...JJ.IU.WLWILI 'Many people are honored after they have passed on but I am glad she could witness things first Mrs. Lavada Smith Miss Usher's niece Alice Faye to Lead Walk Actress Alice Faye, star of Hollywood musicals of the 1940s including "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Rose of Washington Square" and "Tin Pan Alley," will be special guest for an Outings in the Park fund raiser Friday. There is a $10 donation that will benefit the Outings in the Park, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing seniors in metro Atlanta with a place to enjoy the healthful benefits of outdoor activity. For more information, call or 30 black women, mainly teachers, to become Girl Scout leaders. Miss Usher has remained a sustaining member of the Girl Scouts, including paying her dues.

In 1944, Miss Usher was appointed supervisor of education for blacks in the school system and remained in that position until she retired in 1954 as Director of Atlanta Colored Schools. She became' "a Spelman College visiting instructor and taught there for three years. Among her honors, Miss Usher er's niece, said. "I was grateful the school system went ahead with the ceremony, so that she could see the results of her many years of dedication. Many people are honored-after they have passed on, but I am glad she could witness things firsthand." In 50 years as a teacher and administrator, Miss Usher spent 40 years in the Atlanta Public School System.

She has also been an active worker at the Friendship Baptist Church and school volunteer. Miss Usher was a student in the old Atlanta University high school department and received her bachelor's degree, and a master's degree from the University of Chicago. Once she finished college, she began teaching school in Virginia. She stayed in Virginia for 10 years before returning to Atlanta. After returning to Atlanta, she spent the next 40 years in the Atlanta school district, first as an elementary school teacher at the old Bell Street School; then as an assistant principal at Booker T.

Washington High School, and later as principal of David T. Howard Junior High School. In 1943, Miss Usher participated in meetings where plans were being made to open Girl Scouts to black girls. The Southwest Atlanta school at 631 Harwell Road, has been renamed Usher Middle School in honor of one of Atlanta's most respected educators Miss Bazoline Estelle Usher.

The name change will become effective when the school opens as Usher Middle in the 1989-90 school term. While construction of a new $3.6 million wing is complete, a $2 million renovation of the old section of the building is open for bidding. Finished facilities are expected to house approximately 1,000 students. The total will double the current enrollment of 435.
