1 VIDEO MUSIC Might the 'V in MTV now mean 'variety'? By Keith L. Thomas Staff Writer if here. Watching him on stage is, well, absolutely wonderful. (PICK) Wang Chung: "Everybody Have Fan Tonight" If you say Wang Chung fast about 15 times, you sort of get the giddy effect this video can have on a viewer. Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, two of the most talented video directors to ever sit behind a camera, have done it again.

Although quite simple a series of herky-jer-ky, stop-action shots and close-ups it's hard to forget the video once you've seen it and heard the song. "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" is a pleasing piece of pop puffery strengthened by some nice riffs and rhythms. And who could hate lines like these: "Everybody have fun tonightEverybody Wang Chung So grab your loved one and Wang Chung till you drop. But first, take a look at this video. (PICK) Last week's question: Which came first, Band Aid or USA for Africa? Answer: Geldof came before the glove.

In other words, Band Aid. This week's question: In which video does a slot machine pay off $366,770.65 on Feb. MTV, in a growing effort to be more than an outlet for short-form videos, has scheduled a couple of offbeat features that merit attention. Australia's answer to Dick Clark, Ian "Molly" Meldrum, brings his interesting style of interviewing to MTV in a monthly series dubbed "The Meldrum Tapes." The show premieres Dec. 14 at 10 p.m.

and features a very informative and personal session with Cyndi "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" Lauper. The show includes in-depth discussions, music videos and rare footage of everyone's favorite orange-haired songstress. Meldrum, who began his career writing for the Australian rock magazine "Go-Set" in the 1960s, was last seen on MTV in 1985, when the 24-hour music channel ran his exclusive interview with the princess of pop, Madonna. Also coming to MTV is Andy Warhol's "Fifteen Minutes." The monthly show, which will air 10 p.m. Sundays, will feature such stars as Sally Kirk-land, John Oates, Tama Janowitz, the Parachute Club, Debbie Harry and Jerry Hall.

Warhol's show will highlight a little of everything from interviews to new bands to the offbeat. Hey, what did you expect? Billy Idol: "To Be A Lover" Oooooooooooooooo! Have mercy! Have Mercy! The man who has mastered the Elvis snarl takes to the boxing ring along with guitar gunner Steve Stevens and scores a resounding victory. Give credit to an impressive trio of backup singers, who almost steal the match. And give more credit to a truly hypnotic tune laced with tough lines and tantalizing lyrics. Watching Idol sweat and swagger doesn't quite compare to Mike Tyson's feats in the ring, but I'll bet the heavyweight can't deliver a song like the rock star.

"To Be A Lover" is truly a knockout. (PICK) Bruct Springsteen and the MTV's Top Ten 1. "Wild, Wild Life," Talking Heads 2. "Everybody Have Fun Tonight," Wang Chung 3. "Walk Like An Egyptian," the Ban- CYNDI LAUPER: First 'Meldrum' show will feature the popular singer.

Street Band: "War" What Bruce and the Boys do to this old Barret Strong and Norm Whitfield song is probably akin to a nuclear explosion. In other words, this sucker is a blast. Springsteen on stage whether he's singing "Born in the U.S.A." or "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" is worth the price of any video. And then there are the absolutely spellbinding lyrics: "WarWhat is it good forAbsolutely nothingWar is something that I despiseFor it means destruction of innocent And from that moment on, Bruce, the Big Man (Clarence demons) and the rest of the Streeters tear the house down. The close-ups of Bruce growling and groaning are emotionally draining and mesmerizing.

Few stars can take another performer's song and make it seem like their own. Bruce certainly can and does 4. "Human," Human League 5. "Hip to Be Square," Huey Lewis 8nd tho Nows 6. "The Way It Is," Bruce Hornsby and the Range 7.
