SUNDAY, JANUARY 13, 1974 Elje Atlanta Journal and CONSTITUTION 15p LANIER ISLANDS Lake Project Braces for Crowds ftl fell Vrl -'im iiiiimTitTiiiii mm mniriiTTTi- i- i tf ltif iiimi 1 1. nm. niniii re tmiii nr 1 iifir TmiiiTim I By COLIN BESSONETTE Jmnul-CoDiUtDlioi Travel Editor If the current gasoline shortage continues in coming months, vacationers across the country may start looking for destinations close to home. Distances to resorts probably will be measured by gallons of gas rather than miles. Lake Lanier Islands, the public resort and recreation complex under development by the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority an agency created by the Georgia General Assembly is bracing for an unprecedented demand this spring and summer in the wake of the tight gasoline supply.

A spokesman for the resort pointed out that six million people have access to Lake Lanier on one tank of gasoline, based on recently published figures reflecting the fuel consumption and capacity of a number of cars. Only 35 miles northeast of Atlanta by expressway, the multi-million dollar development is "less than 2.5 gallons away from most people within the metropolitan Atlanta area, the heart of Georgia's largest and most affluent population concentration," according to Michael D. Holt, director of marketing for the complex. The islands are within an average one-tank, round-trip driving range of four of Georgia's six largest cities, and the Asheville, Chattanooga, Gadsden and Greenville-Spartanburg metropolitan area, as well as a portion of the Knoxville metropolitan area, Holt said. When a vacationer arrives at Lake Lanier Islands this summer, a number of attractions will be waiting, Holt said.

Among them are golfing on an 18-hole championship course; the "largest and finest" houseboat rental fleet in Georgia; the 135-foot-long, 300-passenger cruise ship Georgia Star, which will serve as a floating restaurant; a white sand beach with bathhouse and restaurant; supervised children's playground; miniature golf course; family and group picnic areas with a 300-person pavilion and mini-restaurant; rental boats, including canoes, paddle boats, kayaks and fishing boats; and free water ski shows and other entertainment. "Once here," Holt said, "the fuel-short vacationer will be able to move all over the islands complex without burning another ounce of precious gasoline, thanks to the free minibus shuttle service which connects all islands accommodations, attractions and parking areas." The accommodations include fully equipped campgrounds and family vacation cottages, already open for business. For futher information, contact Lake Lanier Islands, P. 0. Box 126, Buford, Ga.

EXPANSION PLANNED Henderson Travel Service, the largest black-owned travel agency in the United States, has disclosed plans to open 10 regional offices throughout the country over a five-year period. Henderson Travel Service, with Jacob R. Henderson Sr. as president, was established in Atlanta in 1955.

The company arranges tours to more than 100 countries but specializes in providing group tours to Africa. The firm operates as both a retail travel service and a tour program wholesaler. Last year's sales reached almost 1.9 million, the company said. In announcing plans for expanded operations across the United States, the firm said additional working capital for the venture was secured from the Citizens Trust Bank of Atlanta and The Equitable Life Community Enterprises a minority enterprise small business investment company, a subsidiary of the Equitable Life Assurance Society. Each company provided $100,000 for a total of $200,000.

Jacob R. Henderson vice president, has assumed responsibility for over-all internal operations and Freddye S. Henderson, vice president, will be in charge of all foreign tour development, the company said. Henderson Travel Service received an award in 1972 from the American Society of Travel Agents Inc. (ASTA) in recognition of its leadership in the promotion of American tourism in Africa.

WORLD HOTELS OPENING Both the Hilton and Sheraton hotel chains have announced plans for new facilities on various points of the globe. Hilton International says seven new hotels will open in 1974, including two in Australia, the Sydney and Melbourne Hiltons; and the Barcelona Hilton; Beirut Hilton; Jerusalem Hilton; Bahrain Hilton; and the Quebec Hilton. In total, Hilton International has 59 facilities in operation and 11 under construction. This includes new hotels in Okinawa, Kenya, London, Taipei and Stratford-Upon-Avon. Extensions were opened last year at the Zurich Airport Hilton, Nairobi Hilton and the Tel Aviv Hilton.

First of the new structures to open will be the 572-room Quebec Hilton on Feb. 1, part of the Place Quebec project. Sheraton Corp. has just opened a 81-story, 600-room convention-oriented facility which is Belgium's largest hotel, at Manhattan Center in downtown Brussels. The building includes 10 meeting rooms and two floors of exhibition space, and is equipped with a system which can simultaneously translate four languages.

In addition, Sheraton plans to build a 210-room facility on Tenerife, Canary Islands, the Atlantic Coast resort off the coast of West Africa, with opening scheduled in early 1975. Another project is the 400-room Sheraton in Vilamoura, Algarve, also scheduled to open in early 1975. This building, the third Sheraton to be built in Portuguese territory, will have five restaurants and bars, conference rooms and other features. The worldwide Sheraton system includes more than 300 hotels and motor inns in 27 countries, with more than 150 other hotels and inns under construction.
