SUNDAY, APRIL 17, 1977 Cfjg Atlanta Ifoantal and CONSTITUTION 1j Shaw's 3 B's Again Prove Choral Feast 4s Tt! I 1XL By DAVID OGG Robert Shaw's "Three B'sM special concert with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Symphony Hall last week continued the lengthy and by now expectable tradition of superb choral performances which repeatedly have highlighted past seasons. Friday's choral feast, drawing from that redoubtable Teutonic trio Bach, Beethoven and Brahms began with Bach's Cantata No. 84 "Ich bin vergnugt mit mei-nem Glucke" for soprano soloist and chorus. Program partners with the cantata were Beethoven's Mass in Major, Op. 86, and Brahms' choral and orchestral settings of Holderlin's "Schicksalslied," Schiller's "Name" and Goethe's "Ge-sang der Parzen." Soprano Yvonne Ciannella, soloist in Bach's cantata, of sailed through the work's difficult vocal lines with an ease and clarity more often associ ated with instruments than with voices.

Hers is a bright, lyric voice of considerable beauty. Yet it was her awareness of the intricacies of rhythm and Mil BlWhTi phrasing, a requisite to properly sing Bach, that matched Shaw's meticulous and loving attentions to the score. Soprano Ciannella, mezzo-soprano Marianna Busching, tenor Samuel Hagan and bass-baritone Peter Harrower acquitted themselves most ably as the solo quartet for Beethoven's small-scale Major Mass. If Beethoven in this work forsook heavenly length, he nonetheless lavished on it some of his most affecting melodies. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus did them total justice.

Aside from an occasional stridency in the soprano section, it is impossible to fault the chorus. A generally sumptuous tone, finely shaded dynamic responses and nothing short of incredible diction (notably in the German texts of Brahms' pieces) must place the ASO chorus among Shaw's proudest achievements. Brahms' somber, richly sonorous choral odes were rrxy" realized with grand sweep and power from both orches tra and chorus. Should the possibility of Shaw's leaving the Atlanta Symphony deprive our city of this very special realm of lit 4 erature, then the prospect is indeed a sad one. HipeiMl DARRoom To Depict Go.
